For food, I'd recommend a filler food of sorts (carrots, bread, baked potatoes) in your offhand, and steak, porkchops, golden carrots, mutton, or salmon as a high-saturation food if you need to heal. Potions are also good, fire resistance is a no-brainer, though I'd also recommend slow falling for fall damage immunity and increased mobility (slow falling is also just good for the nether in general). Diamond/netherite is a good option if you still don't feel fully comfortable. It can be done with no gold armor (or, by extension, no armor at all), but isn't recommended, since you'll be spending much more gold on keeping piglins distracted.

At least full gold is recommended, though mixing and matching gold and iron armor is ideal (i.e, gold helmet, iron armor for the rest). If you use the boat strategy, I'd recommend tossing some gold on the ground before killing the brute, this way and piglins which come near you will become distracted by the gold.Īrmor helps. Boats can be a good option in a pinch, or if you want to trap a brute and forget about it (risky, since brutes can still damage you if you get close enough to the boat). Lava is a good option, in fact in some situations it may be better, since the boat only prevents the brute from moving and it must be killed by direct combat (melee or ranged combat), which enrages other piglins. If you're in hardcore, you absolutely want to hunt these things down before one of them ends up killing you by surprise. These can be thought of as the "boss" of the bastion, almost. The biggest threat in one of these would be the brutes. Also note that, in the event you aggro a piglin(s) with combat, only the piglin(s) that was/were attacked cannot be distracted, even though multiple will become hostile. This is why aggroing piglins with a sword sweep isn't ideal. Note that piglin brutes and piglins that were aggroed by combat cannot be distracted. This can be used to distract normal piglins which aggro you. Not to mention they just help mobility a ton. Blocks can be used to block off hordes of piglins, to block off piglin brutes, to tower up from piglins, to make cover to block yourself from crossbow piglins/skeletons, or to block off paths and prevent any mobs from pathing to you. Next, you want ~2 stacks of blocks, 3 or 4 being ideal, with a stack or two stashed in your inventory, but always keep at least a stack on your hotbar. For ammo, normal arrows work fine, but I recommend spectral arrows, to keep track of where brutes are. You also want a ranged weapon of choice, bow or crossbow. Next, you want a pickaxe, at least iron, though diamond is ideal due to the faster mining. This is a problem for a reason I will address shortly. This sounds counter-intuitive, but this sweep attack can cause you to attack and aggro normal piglins if you're trying to kill piglin brutes next to a crowd of them. You want a melee weapon, sword does just fine, but I recommend the axe due to the lack of a sweep attack.
But, with the right preparation and strategy, you can take one of these down in hardcore (and survival) with nothing but a gold helmet, some arrows, and the hotbar layout I'll be proposing.
